Atelier · Publishing & Book Discoverability

Your book deserves more than another marketing guess.

Before you spend more on promotion, understand what may be preventing readers from discovering your book. We help authors assess discoverability, visibility, credibility, adaptability, and keywordability — and identify what deserves attention first.

The journey after publication

Finishing a book is one achievement. Being found is another.

Writing and publishing a book takes enormous effort. But once it's out in the world, a second journey begins: the readers it was written for need to find it, understand its appeal quickly, and feel confident choosing it over everything else competing for their attention.

When results are quieter than hoped, the most common advice is to advertise more. Sometimes that's right. But if the underlying discoverability problem hasn't been examined — an unclear description, a mismatched category, inconsistent author information, search terms readers don't use — more advertising may simply send more people to a page that doesn't persuade them.

That's why we prefer to look first, and recommend second.

About Atelier

A team-based consultancy, led by Sam Atelier, with two years of focused work.

Atelier brings together a team working across book discoverability, publishing presentation, author profiles, digital content, and author services. For the past two years, our work has centred on one question: what might be standing between a book and the readers it was meant for?

We approach every book with honesty and care, examining the available evidence before suggesting solutions. Our recommendations are practical, prioritised, and always linked to what we have actually observed.

Our framework

The five dimensions of book discoverability

We look at every book through five connected lenses. A weakness in one can easily be mistaken for a problem in another — which is why we assess them together.

  1. 1

    Discoverability

Can the intended readers find the book through relevant searches, categories, platforms, or browsing paths?

  2. 2

    Visibility

When readers explore relevant spaces, does the book have a reasonable opportunity to be noticed and stand out?

  3. 3

    Credibility

Does the presentation give readers accurate, consistent information that supports confidence?

  4. 4

    Adaptability

Is the book's positioning suitable for the audiences and platforms it seeks to reach, without misrepresenting its contents?

  5. 5

    Keywordability

Do the title, description, metadata, and relevant search phrases align with how potential readers look for books like this?

Invisible Book Syndrome

The Focus Sheet: a one-page starting point.

“Invisible Book Syndrome” is the term we use for a book that may be difficult for its intended readers to discover. It is never a judgment that a book is poorly written or unsuccessful — only an observation that something may be standing in the way.

Our Invisible Book Syndrome Focus Sheet is a concise, one-page assessment intended to help authors identify potential gaps across the five dimensions and prioritise what to investigate first.

Our approach

Four steps, in the right order

  1. Step 1

    Understand

We begin with your book, its intended readers, and your goals — not with a sales pitch for a particular service.

  2. Step 2

    Assess

We examine the publicly available evidence: listings, descriptions, metadata, author presence, and reader-facing signals.

  3. Step 3

    Prioritize

We separate essential fixes from optional enhancements, so effort goes where it is most likely to matter.

  4. Step 4

    Improve

We recommend practical next steps, and where you choose, provide the services to carry them out.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does Atelier actually do?

We help authors assess how their books are presented and discovered, then offer publishing and digital services that address what we find — from metadata guidance to manuscript formatting and author websites.

Do you guarantee sales or rankings?

No. No honest consultancy can. Platforms control their own systems, and reader decisions are personal. We aim to give you clearer information and better-prepared presentation.

Will you judge whether my book is good?

Our work is about presentation and discoverability, not literary merit. A book can be beautifully written and still be difficult for its readers to find.

Do I need to buy several services?

Not at all. Services can be chosen individually or combined into a scope agreed with you. Many authors start with a General Snapshot Audit.

Will you need my account passwords?

No. We never ask for Amazon, Goodreads, or similar passwords. Where implementation is agreed, we work through permitted, authorised methods.

Let's understand what your book needs next.

Tell us about your book and what you'd like to learn. We'll suggest a sensible first step.
